Most of the kids love to engage in sports from a very young age. They tend to be so energetic and competitive that sometimes loosing a game is not that easy for them to accept. But since the values of a person starts when he is young, you can still do a lot of things to instill sportsmanship to your kids.
You can start teaching your kids to be a good sport by being a role model to them. It should start within you for most kids will look and imitate what they see in their parents. Show encouragement to all athletes even to your kids’ opponents. That way they will understand that though you are supporting your child, still you maintain a good relationship with their opponents.
Kids will also understand the idea of sportsmanship if you can give examples to them. You may research on outstanding sportsmen from sports books, or from sports channel like CBS sports, Fox Sports News and more. You can tell them stories of sports people who were able to show good attitude in a game. If they have a role model aside from you, they will better understand what sportsmanship really means.
You must also teach your kids that winning doesn’t happen at all times. You can instill this when you have chances to play with them in a game and do not allow them to win just because you want them to feel good. From little things, they can slowly understand that sometimes they also loose and there is nothing wrong with it.
As a parent, you are responsible not only with the needs of your kids but with their attitudes as well. It will be necessary to always look at how they respond to certain circumstances and talk to them if they did something wrong to correct it right away. You can also use giving rewards for good attitude like buying them sports gears at their favorite sports store if they are inclined with sports. You only have to always be patient and search for effective strategies and you will learn how to raise your child with a positive attitude.
